Trendy Side Lace Up Crop Top

You know those trendy little tops that  show up in your pinterest or facebook feeds?  There was one I saw recently – a cute crop top with lace up sides. I knew right away I had to make this top!

For this style I am using Patterns for Pirates, Layer Me Up.  This is a great fitted top and very easily modified for this style.  You will also need a grommet press or hand held or table top.

I know you are super excited for this, so lets get started.

On your front and back bodice piece, find the center waist- The smallest spot. ( You can use the Sweetheart bodice for this, just line it up on top of the LMU piece and mark the bottom)  After you find the center waist, measure 1″ down and that is where you will cut for your crop top.

Before you do any construction of this, serge the sides and bottom edges of each piece.  You can zig-zag this if you don’t have a serger or skip it if you don’t want your edges finished.

Measure down 2.5″ (I choose this, because it is where my bra band ends-  I like to keep it covered up on the sides).  Sew this closed on your standard machine.

Pin or press the entire side open.  Then sew the sides with a twin needle, stretch stitch, or cover stitch machine.

Now hem the bottom of your top 1″.

At this point you can return to the rest of the instruction to finish the top.  Add your grommets if desired or any other details you’d like.  You can make loops with bias tape or cording, or sew in some strips of ribbon, instead of using grommets.  Get creative, there are so many options!

  1. Hi! Love this idea! I have a question around the neck and the shoulders. Did you use binding you grommeted? I was thinking of doing the lacing like this but down the sleeve.
